Bipartisan Border Spending Bill is a Step in the Right Direction

A bipartisan supplemental border spending bill providing $4.6 billion for emergency border security was approved by the Senate Committee on Appropriations Wednesday and is now headed to the Senate floor for a vote. It will provide $4.6 billion for humanitarian aid and emergency border security. $2.9 billion will go to Health and Human Services for the care of unaccompanied minors and $1.3 billion will go towards housing detained adult migrants. It will also pay for the hiring of 30 new immigration judges.

This is a great example of lawmakers working together on our broken immigration system. Let’s encourage Congress to finish passing the bill.

Of course sensible immigration policy requires more solutions. While lawmakers should give DHS the resources they need to secure the border, they should also work on passing legislation to create a method for undocumented workers to earn their legal status so we can ID and tax them properly. They should be required to provide a positive ID, pass a criminal background check, provide proof of employment and proof of US residency for at least five years, learn English, and agree to work only for employers that deduct and match taxes.

According to a recent Fox News poll, 73% of voters support allowing undocumented immigrants under the age of 30 who came here as children to earn their legal status if they pass a background check. It also revealed 67% of voters support increasing border security.

Hello, lawmakers! That sounds like the basis for a compromise. With election season gearing up, why not work on some legislation that the majority of voters support? A good starting point for sensible immigration policy would be a bill that secures the border and creates a method for the Dreamers to earn their legal status.

Employers need to continue spreading the word about the need for sensible immigration policy and its benefits. The more our lawmakers hear it from their constituents, the more pressure they will feel to act.

As President Reagan said, “When you can’t make them see the light, make them feel the heat.”

Please continue to contact your elected representatives and ask them to support sensible immigration policy.

May God bless you, and may He continue to bless America.
